Our Story
Starts…
…in 1967, two years before man first walked on the moon. This is when we opened our first restaurant in Murchies Passage,
Durban and 1000 people visited the restaurant on opening day!
Since then we’ve inspired families and friends to come together for shared moments over meals. What followed were many memorable moments.

The first time Bob Moodley drove past what is now the famous Coconut Grove, he dreamed of one day opening a take-away there. But his dream was ridiculed by others, who believed it would be a mistake. Still, he pressed on and, determined to make his dream a reality, put in an offer to buy the defunct shop.”In 1984 I used to go to the Blue Lagoon Roadhouse with friends and hang out there until sunrise. We had no place to buy a bunny or good food and had to drive all the way to Overport.”One day I was driving past and decided then that I wanted to buy the place. Nobody took me seriously, but I was determined and met the owner,” Moodley said. After much negotiation, the then owner, John Thallman, agreed to sell the shop.”When I told him at first that I wanted to open a take-away he thought I was mad. We agreed on a purchase sale price of R115 000 and worked out a payment plan. I would give him a R20 000 deposit, then R1 000 a month for a year, followed by R3 000 a month payments until it was paid off.”I thought he would turn me down, but I persisted, and eventually he agreed. I didn’t have the money and my father-in-law, Kistnasamy Moodley, took an extended bond and gave me R28 000 for the deposit and stock,” he said.Moodley and his wife Paran resigned from their jobs in Johannesburg and, together with their children, they moved to Durban. It took Moodley a month to get the kitchen up and running and business was bad at first.”For months we weren’t doing so well, earning a paltry R20 a day. My wife and I even spoke about her going back to work, but decided against it.”I would sit there day after day and watch the cars drive past. Everyone preferred the Roadhouse. We literally scraped by.”Then Moodley decided to take action. He bought a hi-roof kombi and started a mobile take-away at the fast-developing Springfield Park.”We were renting in Asherville and I would leave home early to be outside Checkers every morning at 5am for bread and then go to the shop.”My son Hegan, then 11, my daughter Javanika, nine, and my other daughter Bhivianka, five months old, would still be sleeping in the car.”We would go to the shop and put them on a mattress while we started preparing sandwiches and bunnies to take in the mobile,” Moodley said.He put so much time into his business that often his family would sleep over at the shop, too exhausted to go home. Moodley credits his family for much of his success.”My children and wife worked long hours because we couldn’t afford to pay staff.”We worked 20-hour days just to get the business running, and slowly it started to grow.”When we stopped running the mobile, we used the kombi to sleep in. It took hard work and sacrifice to build the business,” he said. Then fate stepped in. On a Thursday afternoon in 1992, the department of health closed the Roadhouse at Blue Lagoon for the weekend and the rest was history.”People flocked to the shop on Friday and by Saturday morning we didn’t even have a lettuce leaf left. A friend, Percy Virrana, who owned a shop in the city centre, came to the rescue and stocked our fridge.”On Saturday night we had huge sales and again on Sunday morning we were out of stock,” Moodley said.Their business ethos was simple – they wanted Coconut Grove to be synonymous with consistency and great-tasting, affordable food – together with the added benefit of a safe and fun environment.”We had to be realistic, but when we were thrown in the deep end we realised the huge potential the shop had.”From there we grew and soon realised people were so loyal they could tell when there was the slightest change in the food. Once I changed just one measurement in the ingredients of our chilli sauce and customers started to complain.”I had to go back to the shop at 2am and change it again,” said Paran. Then the couple decided to look for a new name for their now popular take-away.”At first we thought of Casablanca, but then a cousin suggested Coconut Grove and we immediately liked it. But it took another six years before we could realise our dream of having neon signs to illustrate our achievement,” Paran said.”I think people feel safe coming here. There’s this wonderful atmosphere of people eating bunnies and burgers while leaning against their cars and watching all the other cars drive past. There’s such a sense of camaraderie.”Because of it we eventually decided to open a go-kart track, a Milky Lane and, eventually, a restaurant. The restaurant did not work out as planned and we lost a lot of money in trying to make it successful. We eventually liquidated it and focused on the Coconut Grove,” Moodley said.”Sitting back now, we are still in awe at the huge success of what started out as just a little dream. Coconut Grove remains a very large part of our lives and we are still very active in running the business.”We’ve had fun and enjoyed it. It was hard work, but it has afforded us the good things in life. We are proud we are now recognised as an institution. It is our wish to see the Blue Lagoon developed into an entertainment node that appeals to all the citizens of Durban,” said Moodley.

Therefore we at Barcelos strive continually to find a balance between the traditional, healthy home-style cuisine and the fast lane demands of the modern world. Our fast food restaurants specialising in the traditional way of serving healthy and spicy, flame grilled chicken, prepared as authentically as the ancient Portuguese chefs mastered it.
